What is Cdc?
CDC stands for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is responsible for the operation of various health programs in the USA. It is subordinate to the United States Department of Health and Human Services and is headquartered in DeKalb County, Georgia.CDC has been involved in various health programs to control malaria and communicable diseases in past years. The current structure of CDC covers the prevention of various infectious and non infectious disesases; and influenza within the USA. The objective of the agency indicates towards the safety of public health and is responsible for injury prevention, controlling of infectious diseases, health safety and environmental health.
Operations and Functions
The functions of CDC has been orgainzed into research, statistics and information activities. CDC collects statistics and information regarding public health and diseases through surveys and medical data systems. It also runs several programs to train and educate about disesases and health protection measures; and researh works. CDC publishes magazines and journals including Emerging Infectious Diseases and Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Besides, CDC also issues information on obesity, diabetes and other non-infectious maladies.
History
The activities of CDC have been in operation under various names since its foundation in 1940s. Its first preceddor was Office of Malaria Control in War Areas which was replaced by Communicable Diseases Center in 1946 to control Malaria in the USA. In 1957, CDC has been assigned to stop STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) from prevailing. From 1967 Commincable Diseases Center started to be known as National Commicable Disease Center followed by its renaming as Center for Disease Control in 1970. It was again renamed as Centers for Disease Control in 1980 and "prevention" word was added to the title in 1992.
Organizational Structure
CDC has strength of over 15,000 employees and has over 170 designations in the categories of engineer, epidemiologist, physician, scientist, economist, health advisor, statistician, etc. It is headed by the Director, who is appointed by the President of the USA.
