What is California Franchise Tax Board?
California Franchise Tax Board is a governmental department of the US State of California. It is responsible for the collection of the personal as well as the corporate income tax in the state. The corporate tax is the tax imposed on the companies which are doing business whereas the personal tax is imposed on the incomes of the state residents. The department is a division of California State and Consumer Services Agency. The California Franchise Tax Board has set up its field offices in various locations such as Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, Santa Ana, San Francisco and Sacramento. History
The administration regarding tax programs in California dates back to 1879 when
State Board of Equalization and the State Controller were enacted by the state constitution. The office of the Franchise Tax Commissioner was set up in 1929 through the state legislature. The modern form of the board was come into existence when the state dissolved Franchise Tax Commissioner and its power was transferred to the Franchise Tax Board in 1950. John J. Campbell was the first Executive Officer followed by Martin Huff, G.H. Goldberg and Selvi Stanislaus. Latter was the first women to be designated as the executive of the board in 2006. Organizational Structure
California Franchise Tax Board is headed by executive officer who is assisted by California State Controller, Director of California
Department Of Finance and California board of Equalization. It collects personal income tax and corporate income tax from residents of California and businesses respectively. On the other hand, The California Franchise Tax Board acts as the collection authority of vehicle registration revenues for the Department of Motor Vehicles.
