What is Virgin Group?
Virgin Group is based in the UK and operates over 400 companies belonging to the business segments like travel, communications, restaurants, transport, entertainment, aviation etc. Virgin Group has the strength of nearly 50,000 employees at its various businesses. It is headquartered in the City of Westminster, London and has operations at the worldwide level. Virgin Group has also licensed some brands associated with its subsidiaries such as Virgin Mobile USA, Virgin Radio, Virgin Music, Virgin Media etc.
Before the formation of Virgin Group, its founder Richard Branson was involved in the college magazine publication and run Student Advisory Centre. It was 1970 when Richard Branson and his partner opened a record shop and named it Virgin, the word which indicated that “they were all new at business”. In 1972, Richard Branson ventured into the music publication business through Virgin Records, making its debut with four music albums under its belt like Tubular Bells, Radio Gnome Invisible Part 1, The Faust Tapes etc. Virgin also stepped into the video Game business and released games for the consoles like Amiga, the Amstrad CPC, C64 etc. Richard Branson put Virgin in the segments of entertainment and lifestyle by owning Heaven club in London in 1982. Virgin was involved in the formation of its aviation and travel business in 1980's. It started Virgin Atlantic Airline in 1984 along with Virgin Cargo. Its debut flight was operated from Gatwick to Newark amidst the huge celebration. Later on Virgin Group launched Virgin Holidays followed by the launching of its flight from Gatwick to Miami. It launched Virgin Airship and Balloon Company in 1987.
The decade of 1990's witnessed to the new ventures made by Virgin Group into the field of book publication, radio broadcasting, beverages, business, wedding wear, cosmetics, Telecom etc. In the early years of 2000's, the group created its business lines in energy, cars and space traveling while post 2005 saw the launching of its Virgin Health Bank, Virgin Media, Air Asia X etc.
